So earlier last week I decided that I wanted to get more active and start doing something beneficial to my health on the weekends. I decided that going for a hike once a week was a good place to start. I managed to drag my husband into the field trip, let himĀ pick out a hike, we invited a few people, and set a date.
Dustin decided on Kuliouou Ridge and so off we went. Our friends were running late so we sat around…
Now Dustin makes it incredibly hard to get a picture of him as he always throws his hand in front of his face and protests (not a good sign for how our kids will react!) but I managed to catch him before he could ruin the picture. We ended up waiting 45 minutes & I ended up getting bored and took random pictures of what was nearby…

My favorite flower is the plumeria and I think they are absolutely gorgeous. Here are some that I found along the sidewalk and couldn’t help but take a picture. (Fun Fact: For my 20th birthday my husband went out and stole plumerias from random trees and made me a plumeria lei. It smelt amazing and reminded me how sweet he really is…)
Here is another un-ruined picture of my main squeeze….*miracle*
I loved the color of these guys…
By the time we started the hike, I realized how completely out of shape I am and promptly put away my camera equipment in hopes that it would survive the trip. There were six of us in all and I pulled the tail end the whole way. There were several times when I wanted to quit and turn around but for some reason I kept going…and even more times that I questioned aloud why there were no signs declaring the trail as not being “Fat Kid Friendly”. I even told the group that next time the fat kid (me) wants to go for a hike tell me to remember this hike!!!
Anyways, we made it almost to the top (2-3 feet according to the rest of the group) before I decided enough vertical climbing… was enough. Dustin and I sat down on the stairs, took a breather and enjoyed the view. I did take pictures with my phone (which amazingly still got reception) and then we headed back down since sunset was only about an hour away.
Here are the pictures from my cell phone. They aren’t that great but you should get the point…

The way down proved to be both excitingly steep and very hard on a persons joints. Being that I have one bad knee I found it to be very painful… We got almost half way down when I took a pretty nice spill that left my right leg (home of my bad knee) in a position I wasn’t aware it was still able to contort to..
Today is Sunday and my knee is sore, my calfs are tightened like knots and my rear end is really sore too….hahaha! All in all, the view was worth it and I will be going on another hike this coming weekend. Dustin and I have decided to try Kuliouou again when we are in better shape to do so.
Feel free to suggest a location if you are on O’ahu and know of a great trail…
